Initial Comment:
ranlib needs to be run for Mac OS X for the libgetopt.a 
archive. This has been tested for Mac OS X 10.2.2. 
Warning: it may affect the compile on other operating 
systems (Solaris will be okay as ranlib does nothing and 
always returns 0)
