I couldn't see anything setting $status either.  But it's late here. :) 

And you're showing your age with "abend."  I'm a boring old fart, but
even I only know of "abend" as something that predates my experiences
with computing.  Damn, but you're OLD. :)

Then there is the problem of path cleaning.  Many perl plugins clean out
the PATH environment variable.  The recent changes to the check_mailq
plugin which handle qmail have this problem and fail to work because
qmail-qstat calls several utilities that are not in the cleaned path.
The changes were not fully tested.  I have reported the problem but seen
no acknowledgement.
