Well, the status line is a couple hundred characters long.  If you check
the plug-in development guidelines
(http://nagiosplug.sourceforge.net/developer-guidelines.html), you'll
see they request output lengths be kept as short as possible so they'll
show up nicely on pagers.

It would also be nice if there's a carriage return at the end, although
I don't know if that matters to nagios.

No.  I leave on vacation tomorrow, and am currently in "Don't change
anything!" mode.
