Initial Comment:
plugins-scripts/check_log.sh uses the gnu extension to
tail: '--lines=1' rather than the more portable '-n 1'.
The following would ensure it works on more systems:

-lastentry=`$GREP "$query" $tempdiff | $TAIL --lines=1`
+lastentry=`$GREP "$query" $tempdiff | $TAIL -n 1`
