Changing the major "number" to letters in alphabetical order or
codenames beginning with them, then? Or are there package management
tools which can't work with that?

1.5	  ->	Aluminum.5
2.0	  ->	Boron.0
3.1.41	  ->	Chrome.1.41
4.7.11	  ->	Darmstadtium.7.11

etc. etc..
