I agree this is not a good state of affairs, which is why I am  
prepared to create a new release when we have a good fix for this.  
Peter Pramberger has provided a 2nd patch which I can test from  
Monday and Sean Finney and Andreas Ericsson are looking into it too  
through their new routines for running external commands.

This definitely looks like a change that Redhat have made to their  
kernel (confirmed by your server upgrade), so it was really outside  
of our hands. I'm surprised we haven't had more complaints about this  
because it must affect every external call....
