Why is "-pedantic" annoying?  This flag tells GCC to warn about the
usage of features not supported by the C standard (C89 or C99, depending
on other GCC flags; IIRC our goal was to stick with C89 for the moment,
but in either case "-pedantic" makes sense IMO).  Do we want to use
non-standard features?
