[Nagiosplug-help] make errors

I got the following make errors:

bash-2.05# make all
cd . && /usr/local/bin/aclocal
cd . && /usr/local/bin/automake --gnu Makefile
autom4te: need GNU m4 1.4 or later: /usr/ccs/bin/m4
configure.in: `AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE' must be used
automake: your implementation of AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE comes from an
automake: old Automake version.  You should recreate aclocal.m4
automake: with aclocal and run automake again.
make: *** [Makefile.in] Error 1

I have installed m4 already.. but anyone knows how to recreate aclocal.m4 with 
aclocal?
I got the following when i try to recreate aclocal.m4:
/usr/local/bin/aclocal --acdir=xxxxx
aclocal: `configure.ac' or `configure.in' is required

I have configure.in inside the acdirectory specified, but why does it still 
ask for that?
