Ok, more wild guesses, but running tcpdump would help...

With linux there is always the possibility of arp leakage.  I have
experienced much weirdness because of it. It would be best, if this is
indeed reproducible , to run "tcpdump -efSnvp port BLAH"  where BLAH is
nrpe port on all hosts and dump to a file.

It helps if times are synced on all the hosts.

The switches in tcpdump above are purely gratuituous...  no arp intended..
