[Nagiosplug-help] Does Nagios require Sendmail for Email?

I was just wondering if it's possible to have Nagios bounce emails off a
specified SMTP server.  I currently have email being sent directly to
several accounts within my network using sendmail, but our firewall requires
that outbound email must come only from a designated SMTP server.  Is this
something that must be configured from sendmail or can Nagios send email
directly to a SMTP server without sendmail?  Thanks for the help!
