you can use the check_log script located in your
libexec directory.  the first time you run the script
it creates a copy (-O oldfile) of the log file (-F
logfile) you would like to scan ... the results of
your scan will be zero ... however the next time you
run check_log on the log file then it will execute a
diff on the real log file vs the copy it made and
reports matches on the patter you request (-q query). 
there is more information if you edit the script.  I
also think you could use something like swatch but I
have never used it nagios.
