I do this, though I use an email->cell phone page gateway.

You may be interested in my rate-limit program:

http://dcs.nac.uci.edu/~strombrg/rate-limit.html

...which writes nagios notices to a queue-file, and periodically sends
summaries of what was in the queue, and deletes the items in the queue.

This ends up meaning that you don't get a lot of excess stuff on your
cell phone, and also helps a bit with flapping machines.
