The answer to the "do I need the MIBS" question is: "it depends". :(

If you are going to "proactively" monitor the switch (via active checks), and there are existing plugins for the switch, then you should not need the MIB's (as some other person figured out how to do the appropriate SNMP queries). 

If the plugins do not exist and you are going to create them yourself, then you will likely need them. 

If you want Nagios to respond to SNMP traps sent by the switch ("reactive" monitoring via passive checks), then you will definitely need the MIB's.
