Once more, thanks very much for your sound advice.

David Bruce over on the pnp4nagios-users email list answered a similar
question recently thus:

Look at these two references

http://docs.pnp4nagios.org/templates/start
Special Templates: http://www.pnp4nagios.org/pnp/tpl_special

You will create a file in ~/etc/check_commands called check_nrpe.cfg
which will contain the line "CUSTOM_TEMPLATE = 1". This tells
pnp4nagios to use the $ARG1$ (check_load) in your Nagios service
definition as the name of the template to use.

You will still get the default pnp template until you make new
templates in ~/share/templates. You can copy or simlink to the
distributed templates in ~/share/templates.dist. They are excellent
starting points and there is one for each of your Nagios Service
checks listed below.

I confess I haven't tried this advice myself yet - I'm still using a
more kludgy workaround which involves configuring a separate check
command for each nrpe check type and copying the standard templates to
templates having the new command names.

Cheers,
