[Nagiosplug-help] Cannot increase the timeout of check_smtp

I've tried to increase the timeout of the check_smtp command by using  
the following command in services.cfg:

  check_command check_smtp!-t 20

But the check still fails several times a day with a timeout of 10  
seconds:

  Notification Type: PROBLEM
  Service: SMTP mail server
  Host: mail
  Address: 1.2.3.4
  State: CRITICAL
  Date/Time: Fri Aug 12 22:18:45 CEST 2005
  Additional Info:
  CRITICAL - Socket timeout after 10 seconds

All other Nagios timeouts are set to their default values.  Any idea  
why Nagios still fails with a timeout of 10 seconds instead of 20  
seconds?

I run Nagios on a Debian Sarge system.  The following packages are  
installed:

  nagios-common 1.3-cvs.20050402-2.sarge.1
  nagios-mysql 1.3-cvs.20050402-2.sarge.1
  nagios-plugins 1.4-6
