[Nagiosplug-help] Error compiling 1.4b1 on Solaris 9

If this is the only output you got, then that strongly suggests that
none of the libraries in the directories that find-sym searches
contained the symbol you required.

That in turn probably either means that you need to search more
directories (by adding them to the relevant variables in find-sym), or
perhaps more likely, that you need to install a (newer) version of the
library that contains that symbol.

...or upgrade your distribution. :)

What I get when I search for your symbol on a Fedora Core 3 x86-64
system, is:

seki-strombrg> find-sym -s ldap_start_tls_s | tee /tmp/find-sym.output
Library candidate for addition to your $CC
link line: -L/usr/lib64 -lldap You may also want
-R/usr/lib64 or -Wl,-rpath
-Wl,/usr/lib64 to build the
relevant directory into the resulting
executable's search path - this is
generally preferred to using
$LD_LIBRARY_PATH or similar, though using
$LD_LIBRARY_PATH from a wrapper script is not
that bad.

The cleanest way of adding some flags to your link line is to add
them to $LDFLAGS, remove ./config.cache if there is one, and
rerun ./configure.

The same is true for compilation flags: the cleanest way is to add
them to your $CFLAGS.

However, I have found a surprising number of applications that do
not use these variables.

In that case, I have found that a larger number of applications
will accept your additional flags by adding them to your $CC
variable.
