Sounds like a problem I had early in my configuration.

service checks 'check_*' running properly and showing UP (green)
but 'check-host-alive' failing and showing host DOWN (red)

CHECK THAT: /usr/sbin/ping -U $HOST
works.

ping version needs to be the new iputils-ping.
