[Nagiosplug-help] NRPE on Solaris 10 sending spurious text

I've built the latest (2.12) NPRE on Solaris 10 and I'm getting some 
bizarre behaviour.  In addition to the expected output from the remote 
plugin, I also get a line of garbage each time.  For instance:

  [nagios at nagsvr] $ /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H host -c 
check_denyhosts
  DenyHosts UP
  27 nrpe[2747]: [ID 681486 FACILITY_

(that 2nd line looks like mangled syslog entry).

  [nagios at nagsvr] $ /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H host -c 
check_tomcat
  HTTP OK HTTP/1.1 200 OK - 6964 bytes in 0.124 seconds 
|time=0.124016s;;;0.000000 size=6964B;;;0
  /local/nagios/libexec/restart_tomcat $ARG1$ $ARG2$ $ARG3$

(OK, this time the next line comes from nrpe.cfg)

I've found a few earlier posts with similar problems, but no solutions.  
Any ideas?
