[Nagiosplug-help] NRPE document states version that are later then current for plugins and NRPE

I have installed the latest versions for nrpe and plugins and I get 0 bytes 
returned for nrpe_check
OS is RedHat enterprise 4.8
Installed under xinetd
nagios-plugins-1.4.15  nrpe-2.12
Without the –n option I get SSL error
The document I downloaded for NRPE says plugins are 1.46 and NRPE 2.8
But on the nagios.org/download I can only get the versions above

I didnt see an option to complile under SSL
When I use the 

[root at frhghmmodb libexec]# ./check_nrpe -n -H localhost
CHECK_NRPE: Received 0 bytes from daemon.  Check the remote server logs for 
error messages.

I turd debugging on in config file by setting to 1 did a tail -f on syslog but 
nothing shows up.

1. I used latest doc and tars
2. I see a lot of references to use either xinetd or nrpe as a daemon but find 
no reference in doc on how to do this and the service was not created. (the 
PDF is last updated may 1 2007
3. cant be network issues as I am testing on same machine.
4. I saw no reference or optsion to compile with SSL (not needed im my case so 
I would like to test without.
