PS:

I turned on debug mode.

starting the test box nrpe, with   nrpe -c debug.cfg -d
then running check_nrpe -H testbox -n

the test box logs:

Connection from x.x.x.x port 29904
Host address checks out ok
Handling the connection...
Error: Could not complete SSL handshake. 1
Connection from x.x.x.x closed.
